Aim - The course is designed to provide the very first steps towards Astronomy. The primary objective of the course is to ignite the underlying curiosity in the young minds through interactive and fun sessions in Astronomy.

Duration - Course comprises 22 sessions (60mins each) of both theoretical as well as activity-based sessions along with evening and night sky watch.

Topics Covered: The primary aim of the course is to create awareness among the students about space, stars, galaxies and the universe. The course also aims at addressing some of the basic concepts in this subject and makes an attempt to satisfy the curiosity of the young minds.

Courses Description

Introduction - Introduction to astronomy, ancient astronomical practices, myths and legends and 4W & 1H of astronomy.
Our planet Earth and its motions: a fun journey exploring our home planet and its various motions, seasons, time, and activities.

The Sun and the Solar system: A dive into our solar system including its origin, the Sun, its life cycle and properties, the planets, moons, and comets.
Stars, Constellations and the Universe: An exploration of stars, what constellations are, stories behind them, a ride through the galaxy and outer space.
Future: An interactive and fun packed section on future of space exploration, fun and weird facts about space ending in an activity.
Observe the surface of the moon through the telescope and overnight observations.

Course Description :-

Recap – Starting with a recap of Astronomy Level 1 and the concepts learnt throughout the year.
Light: an in depth understanding of light and the electromagnetic spectrum. Understanding how data is analyzed from the light of stars.

Stars: An advanced understanding of stars including its evolution, specifically its end stages and the different criteria for specific end stages. Different classifications of stars and the HR Diagram is discussed.
Beyond Stars: Diving deeper into the universe while exploring advanced concepts such as black holes, star clusters, neutron stars and galaxies. Exoplanet detection is also discussed.
Observational astronomy: Positional astronomy and observational astronomy is deeply understood.
Messier Objects: The famous messier catalog is discussed and understood as a prelude to the overnight observation session.

DAY TIME WORKSHOPS

1. Measuring scales of astronomy

Description : - In this workshop, participants will be introduced to different activities based on Sun like, finding true north, solar time, making a sundial, Safe methods to view the sun, Sunspots etc.

Duration - 4 hours.

Learning Outcome :- – Cardinal directions, apparent motion of sun, Size and shape of the sun Measuring time using the position of sun, Calculating the size and shape of sun, waysto say safe from observing the sun.

2. Solar system

Description :- - Origin and evolution of Solar system, classification on inner and outer planets, layers of solar System, Oort cloud and beyond.

Duration - 4 hours.

Learning Outcome :- Outcome– To understand the characteristics of the heavenly bodies present in our solar system, distance and their sizes.

3. Journey of a comet

Description : - Comets and its origin, path of the comets and types of comets.

Duration - 4 hours.

Learning Outcome - Participants will learn about the path of the comets and different types of comets.

4. Constellations in the night sky

Description :- Origin of Constellations, mythological stories and its significance, Observing the constellations through the black box with a 3D constellation kit.

Duration - 4 hours.

Learning Outcome - – Understand the position and importance of the stars and their patterns in the night sky.

5. Formation of Moon

Description - - Moon and its Formation, Understanding the Surface features and Craters on Moon surface, Formation of phases of moon.

Duration - 4 hours.

Learning Outcome :- Participants will understand about the origin of moon, surface features and phases of moon.

Observational Workshops

1 . Characteristics of Our Moon

Description - Moon and its surface features, Tidal lock and Synchronous rotation. Moonmapping: Observing the surface of Moon through Telescope and plotting its surface.

Duration - 4 hours.

Time period :- Can be conducted in the evening only between 6 pm – 9 pm

Learning Outcome - Participants will learn about the surface features and get an opportunity to view the same through the telescope. Also understand the importance of moon with respect to earth.

OVERNIGHT SKY WORKSHOPS

1. Explore the universe

Description :- Understanding the stars and their patterns-Constellations, rising and setting time of stars/Constellations using star Chart. Discussion on movement of planets around the sun and the phenomena caused by them. Observing the planets through telescope.

Duration - Overnight (6 hours)

Learning Outcome- Identify the constellations, Observe the objects like Stars, planets and deep sky objects.

Make it and take it ! - Telescope Making Workshop

Description :- In this workshop participants will be introduced to Optics (basics) and principles of telescope. Making a telescope 4.5inch reflector telescope

Duration - - 15 hours
